  • Valuation of Green Homes and Buildings
Many home builders today face an opposite outcome – they build with high-performance products and practices that make their homes more energy efficient and comfortable, so rightly expect a premium. Yet, the home ends up appraising at the same level as traditional construction. This leaves them wondering, “why bother with green building?”

  • Condensation in the Tropics
Condensation is looming as the greatest single cause of damage and failure of buildings. It occurs in all types of buildings due to poor design or inappropriate use of materials (Standards Australia, 1992). Once condensation problems such as mould, wood rot, electrical safety issues, and corrosion are established it is very difficult and expensive to rectify. (Extract from paper by Dr. Richard Aynsley)

The aim of the subgroup is to focus on Construction and Demolition waste. With the introduction of the new waste levy by the State Government in December 2011 and the knowledge that 'much of the C & D waste can be a recoverable resource’ the TGBN would like to move forward a regional strategy by planning for action on C&D waste recovery solutions with other industry stakeholders, LAWMAC and the FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils. Please see the document deposit relating to this work.

  • Energy Rating Document Deposit.
The TGBN supports discussion and information sharing concerning National Constructions Codes & buildings codes energy efficiency performance provisions, mandatory disclosure regulation and thermal simulation software as it applies to vernacular architecture in the tropics. There is a concern that naturally ventilated tropical designs found in Northern Australia struggles to comply and the overall intent of reducing energy use by design is undermined. See the document deposit relating to this area.

  • Air-conditioning in the Tropics Document Deposit
Regulations governing the placement of air-conditioning units and systems require work to 'design-out' energy guzzling, noisy and unsightly problems. The TGBN in conjunction with Project Air conditioning’s Keiren O'Brien presented the problems and recommendations to the Urban Design Advisory Board on the 25th September 2009. The presentation is attached to the document deposit area. The TGBN needs to move this issue along with AIRAH the Cairns Regional Council and industry stakeholders.

See the document deposit area to get the guide.
