2010 Building Regulations and naturally ventilated tropical design

Live link up from JCU Cairns to Townsville campus
15th September 12pm to 2pm

The rooms at respective campuses are:
• Cairns - Building A21 room 00
• Townsville - Building DB025 room 001

Thermal Performance Simulation Software will be a Deemed to Satisfy solution to comply with the proposed 2010 edition of the Building Code of Australia – Volume 2. There is a concern amongst designers that naturally ventilated tropical designs found in Northern Australia may struggle to comply with the proposed building regulations.

Michael Plunkett, North Australia Director of the Association of Building Sustainability Assessors and an accredited assessor and second generation software trainer who has formal qualifications in Design and Architecture will present:

• Thermal Performance Simulation Software: How the current second generation versions models a building and how software tools can help you achieve compliance with the proposed 6 star minimum rating in BCA 2010.

• Exploration of the other options that is available to builders and designers to achieve compliance.

Public comment on the Regulatory Impact Statement examining the impacts of the proposed Energy Efficiency provisions for BCA 2010 is due to commence in early September 2009.

• Consideration may be given to a strategy that delays the implementation of a higher stringency level in the Energy Efficiency Provisions of the BCA until further research is carried out on the modelling of naturally ventilated designs by software.

• COAG and the Australian Department of Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts are driving key changes and we may need to engage at a ministerial level.

A case study will be presented: ‘The Kula House’ is an average size low-set affordable family home on a standard building block with common site constraints to position the house. It is naturally ventilated with no air-conditioning. There is R3.3 roof insulation and eaves are at minimum 900mm. The house achieves a 5 star rating this year and would fail to get building approval in 2010. This house is entered for this years HIA energy efficiency award.
