Key Note Presentation 2: Improving the Resilience of Housing – Learning from Tropical cyclone Yasi

Cam Leitch, Cyclone Testing Station, James Cook University
Mr Cam Leitch is the manager of the Cyclone Testing Station (CTS) at the James Cook University in Townsville. Cam joined the CTS as a Research Engineer in 2002, with over 20 years of experience in the structural engineering field and was appointed as manager in May 2008. His work at CTS involves leading a team involved in research, testing and consulting into the effects of wind induced loading in low rise buildings and the behaviour of structural systems to resist simulated wind loading.

One of Cam’s main research interests is to improve the structural performance of housing and metal clad sheds to resist wind loading caused by tropical cyclones. This forms part of a CTS research interest to assess the vulnerability of structures (including housing in Australia) to severe winds.

Taking inspiration from the design pioneers, Gary has always understood the importance of adapting a building’s fabric and form to create spaces of comfort in the tropical Queensland climate. His business, The Hunt Design Group, has been based in tropical North Queensland’s Port Douglas for over two decades. Gary’s influence on the area’s architecture extends from the rebirth of the town’s historic Court House Hotel, through the Silky Oaks resort nestled in the pristine Daintree rainforest, to the Treetop Resort on the edge of Four Mile Beach.

Key Note Presentation 4: FASTABUILD: a better solution for remote housing

Jon Nott, Jon Nott Building
Jon Nott and business partner Geoff Hoad have over forty years combined experience building quality homes on the Atherton Tablelands and in the Cairns area. Jon Nott Building has won numerous HIA awards between 1992 and 1994 and in 2006 Jon Nott Building won the 2006 Master Builders National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award... under $2 million for the Australian Coffee Centre which was built on a granite escarpment overlooking the Skybury plantation at the top of the Great Dividing Range near Mareeba.

Jon Nott has developed a quality, quick, affordable housing solution which is very suited for remote areas. The house comes pre finished sheeted, painted, windows in, all electrical in place ready to connect to main harness, insulated, pre finished roof and ceiling panels but still fits on a normal semitrailer. As a result, it is easy to transport to any site.

The cost effective design eliminates expensive onsite trades. The flexible design is not restricted by transport issues such as container sizes or the width that can be transported on the road. It is so simple erect that construction can be done with unskilled labour and one supervisor.

A 140m2 house can be completely finished in just 21 days from marking out too moving in. There is no need for heavy machinery, as the houses can be constructed with man-power and one All Terrain or Backhoe.”
