Suite of guidance materials for Tropical Australia

Suite of guidance materials for Tropical Australia

The ABCB has developed a suite of guidance materials to assist practitioners with the application of the NCC to northern Australia climate responsive designs.

The materials demonstrate the practical application of the NCC for dwellings that take account of passive design principles.

Climate responsive designs take account of passive design principles with the intention of minimising the need for artificial cooling. Free-running designs require no artificial heating or cooling. Free-running designs rely entirely on passive design features. A hybrid designs include a combination of free-running and conditioned spaces. These designs are popular in northern Australian climates.

Targeted consultation with relevant state and territory stakeholders highlighted the need to clarify how free-running and climate responsive designs can meet the relevant Performance Requirement in the NCC.

In response, the Advisory Note clarifies the intent of the Performance Requirement for free-running dwellings, and illustrates the likely process for developing a Performance Solution for the design of a free-running dwelling. In addition, four Case Studies demonstrate how a climate responsive design may satisfy the relevant Performance Requirement. Each Case Study details the specific considerations for the given climate zone and method of compliance.

Three Case Studies illustrate NCC compliance for climate responsive designs in three different climate zones using the NCC Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) Elemental Provisions.

The fourth Case Study illustrates how a tropical house using a hybrid design may meet the relevant Performance Requirement through the use of a Performance Solution.

The Advisory Note and Case Studies are now available for free download from the Resource Library:

Performance Solution for P2.6.1
This Case Study demonstrates how to develop a Performance Solution for the energy efficiency of a house. It is based on the Performance Requirement P2.6.1 in NCC Volume Two.

The house design is responsive to a tropical climate and based on passive design principles. The hybrid design contains both free-running and conditioned elements. Using timber frame construction and cement sheet cladding, it is to be built in the Northern Territory.

Deemed-to-Satisfy Solution for P2.6.1
This Case Study demonstrates how to develop a Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) Solution for the energy efficiency of a house. It is based on the elemental DTS Provisions in Part 3.12 and meets the Performance Requirement P2.6.1 in NCC Volume Two.

The house design is responsive to a tropical climate and based on solar passive design principles. The design limits the energy used for cooling. It has open living areas and high ventilation. Using lightweight timber construction with decorative cement sheet cladding, it is to be built in Carnarvon in Western Australia.

Deemed-to-Satisfy for P2.6.1
This Case Study demonstrates how to develop a Deemed-to-Satsfy (DTS) Solution for the energy efficiency of a house.

Using lightweight timber construction with decorative cement sheet cladding, it is to be built in Rockhampton in Queensland.

Free-running Dwellings
This Advisory Note describes how to develop an energy efficiency Performance Solution for a free-running dwelling. This type of design is used in hot climates where cooling is the main consideration. These dwellings are deliberately designed to use natural air-movement as a substitute for air-conditioning.

P2.6.1 in NCC Volume Two is the relevant Performance Requirement for this Performance Solution.
